Meta Buys Conductor, the App That Runs a Team of Coding Agents at Once, and Shuts Its Cloud Down on November 20
Meta acquired Conductor on November 4, 2026, Axios reported, with Meta confirming to TechCrunch and founder Charlie Holtz confirming on Conductor's site; terms were not disclosed. Conductor runs several coding agents in parallel workspaces, claims more than 100,000 users, and winds down Conductor Cloud on November 20 after a November 13 read-only date.

- 01THE REPORT — On November 4, 2026, Axios reported Meta has acquired Conductor; Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch and founder Charlie Holtz confirmed it on Conductor's site. Terms were not disclosed.
- 02THE CONFIRMATION — TechCrunch's report and SiliconANGLE's same-day report, both opened and verified directly, independently confirm the deal, the parallel-agent design, the funding history and the wind-down dates.
- 03THE WATCHPOINT — Whether Meta's promised early-2027 interface preserves Conductor's multi-agent orchestration, and whether the November 20 cloud shutdown proceeds on schedule with user data exported.
WHAT HAPPENEDWhat Happened
Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup that lets a developer run several coding agents at once, each in an isolated copy of a codebase, Axios reported on November 4, 2026. Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch, and Conductor founder and CEO Charlie Holtz wrote on Conductor's site: "I have big news: Conductor is joining Meta." Financial terms were not disclosed.
Conductor's software does not build its own models. It orchestrates agents from other labs, including Anthropic's Claude Code, OpenAI's Codex and Cursor, each in its own workspace, so a developer can review and merge what several agents produce in parallel. The desktop app runs on Macs, and a hosted version, Conductor Cloud, puts agents in sandboxed virtual machines where they can keep working for hours, with progress checkable from an iPhone app.
Conductor was founded in 2024 by Holtz and CTO Jackson de Campos, formally as Melty Inc., and launched its core product in July 2025. It raised a $22 million Series A in March 2026 from Spark Capital and Matrix, with Y Combinator and the founders of Notion and Linear also backing it. Conductor says on its website that more than 100,000 people use the product, and SiliconANGLE notes that Meta, Google and Spotify engineers were already among its users when the Series A was announced.
The current product winds down in stages. New sign-ups and downloads stopped on November 4, 2026, and Pro subscribers now get paid features free. Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20, after which the company will begin deleting cloud user data; before that date users can export data or move cloud workspaces onto their own machines, and active subscribers will get refunds. Local Mac copies keep working until early 2027, when the team expects to release a new interface it has not yet described.
Holtz said on X that he looks forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta's Superintelligence Labs, and people familiar with the deal told Axios that Meta expects the Conductor team's speed at shipping products to help build its next generation of AI coding tools. The deal landed the same day OpenAI said it plans to acquire Pierre Computer, another developer-tools startup, after earlier announcing plans to buy Ona, which runs coding agents in cloud sandboxes.
WHY IT MATTERSThe contest moved from the model to the workbench
Meta already has its own coding models, including Muse Spark Open, released in October 2026, and Muse Code. Buying Conductor does not buy a better model. It buys the interface where a developer assigns, watches and merges work from several agents at once, and a team that shipped that interface fast enough to reach more than 100,000 users in about sixteen months.
That is the same layer OpenAI bought the same day with Pierre Computer, whose code-storage libraries already draw the code inside Codex. Both deals say the bottleneck in agent coding is no longer generating code. It is running, reviewing and merging a fleet of agents without losing track of what each one changed.
WHY IT MATTERSA shutdown schedule is part of the deal, not a footnote
Conductor's users get sixteen days from announcement to cloud shutdown, with a read-only week in between and data deletion to follow. That is a fast wind-down even by acqui-hire standards, and it puts the burden on users to export workspaces before November 20. The promise of something new in early 2027 is deliberately vague: no product name, no feature list, no migration path beyond moving cloud workspaces onto local machines.
For buyers of agent tools, the lesson is about lock-in at the orchestration layer. A tool that holds a developer's parallel workspaces can disappear on an acquirer's timetable, and the only hedge is that the work itself lives in ordinary code repositories that survive the tool.
SIGNAL JUDGMENT — ANALYSISMeta bought the workbench, not another model
Tokenta Signal's judgment: the Conductor deal matters because it buys the layer where agent coding actually breaks down, assigning, watching and merging several agents at once, not another model. Paired with OpenAI's Pierre deal the same day, it shows both labs now agree the contest is over the machinery around the model. The claim to discount is any reading of this as a model-capability acquisition, and the claim to test is whether Meta's next coding interface, promised for early 2027, keeps Conductor's multi-agent orchestration or absorbs it into Muse Code.

EVIDENCEEvidence
TechCrunch's November 4, 2026 report, opened and verified directly, confirms Meta acquired Conductor, that Axios originally reported the deal, that founder Charlie Holtz wrote "Conductor is joining Meta," that Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch, that the startup was founded in 2024 and launched its core product last summer, that its agents come from labs including Anthropic and OpenAI, and that Conductor Cloud shuts down on November 20. SiliconANGLE's same-day report, also opened and verified directly, independently confirms the Axios origin, the undisclosed terms, the multi-agent parallel-workspace design, the November 13 read-only and November 20 shutdown dates, the $22 million March 2026 Series A from Spark Capital and Matrix, and the more than 100,000 users claimed on Conductor's site.
