- 01THE REPORT — Apple reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results on November 2.
- 02THE RECORD — Revenue of $114.5 billion, with iPhone at a record $57.58 billion.
- 03THE WARNING — Ternus said the memory pricing environment is unprecedented and still rising.
WHAT HAPPENEDWhat Happened
Apple reported fiscal fourth-quarter results on November 2, with revenue of $114.5 billion, up 12% year on year, net income of $30.7 billion and earnings per share of $2.10. It is the first earnings report since John Ternus succeeded Tim Cook as chief executive on September 1.
The iPhone business contributed $57.58 billion, up 17% year on year, a September-quarter record. Ternus called it the best fiscal year in Apple's history, with full-year revenue of $478.8 billion and net income of $132.2 billion.
The other side of the report is cost. Ternus said on the earnings call that the memory pricing environment is unprecedented and that memory procurement prices are expected to keep rising in the December quarter. CFO Kevan Parekh guided holiday-quarter gross margin to 45% to 46%, below this quarter's 47.9%, mainly because of memory costs and the Siri AI ramp-up.
RECORD REVENUE, SQUEEZED MARGINRecord Revenue, Margins Heading Down
There is nothing wrong with the $114.5 billion figure itself; the issue is its composition. About 1 percentage point of this quarter's 47.9% gross margin came from a tariff refund. Strip that out, and gross margin actually fell about 1 percentage point sequentially, mainly because of memory.
Holiday-quarter guidance of 45% to 46% means the decline continues. Apple already raised prices in June and September, on Mac and iPad and on the iPhone, and those increases offset only part of the pressure. Memory prices are rising faster than Apple can raise its own.
MEMORY AS A TAXMemory Has Become a Bill the Whole Industry Shares
Ternus's words were that the memory pricing environment is unprecedented, and that prices are expected to keep rising after December. Apple's inventories rose from $5.7 billion a year earlier to $14.5 billion, a large part of it memory stockpiled in advance.
Stockpiling buys only time. COO Sabih Khan said on the call that production of the iPhone Duo is already constrained, and that Mac and iPad face the same memory-driven supply constraints in the holiday quarter. Once the cheap inventory is used up, the cost pressure shows in full.
TERNUS'S FIRST REPORTThe New CEO's First Report Answers the Cost Question First
Two months into the job, Ternus's first earnings report tells a two-sided story. Record revenue and iPhone numbers gave him a strong opening; memory and the margin guidance gave the market a reality to digest. Shares fell about 3% after hours, showing the market priced the margin math first.
Holiday-quarter revenue guidance of 7% to 10% growth, or $153.8 billion to $158.1 billion, would still likely be the highest quarterly revenue in Apple's history. Record revenue and falling margins are both true at once; that is the complete picture of this report.

SIGNAL JUDGMENT — ANALYSISThe More It Sells, the Heavier the Memory Tax
Tokenta Signal's judgment: Apple's report makes one thing clear. The bill for AI infrastructure's grab for memory is being passed on to every consumer electronics product. A revenue record cannot hold back the cost curve.
