OpenAI's Models Have Moved into Google's Cloud
Google Cloud now stocks three model families side by side: its own Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and now OpenAI's GPT. Enterprises no longer need to switch clouds to compare prices and swap models within a single bill.

- 01THE POST — On October 21, Google Cloud announced three OpenAI models entering Model Garden in private preview.
- 02THE TERMS — Marketplace purchasing, creditable against cloud commitments; Codex workflows connect directly to Google's platform for inference.
- 03THE LIMIT — Invited enterprises only, non-production use; pricing and licensing details undisclosed.
WHAT HAPPENEDWhat Happened
On October 21, Google Cloud announced that OpenAI models have entered Model Garden in private preview, starting with three: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Enterprise customers buy through the Google Cloud Marketplace, with spend creditable against existing cloud commitments, and the Codex command line and desktop workflows can connect directly to Google's platform for inference.
Google's line is blunt: no other hyperscale cloud offers all three model families at once. OpenAI stresses that Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner and Google is an additional distribution channel. The private preview is limited to invited enterprises; general availability is set for the coming weeks, with Gemini for Business and Antigravity support still on the way.
THE DEALThe shelf is worth more than the model
Over the past year, model vendors' moats kept changing: first parameters, then price, now distribution. OpenAI's models appearing on Google Cloud amounts to admitting a reality: when enterprises buy models, the first question is whether they can be used directly inside the cloud they already pay for.
Google Cloud's calculation is equally clear. It does not win by exclusive Gemini; it wins by putting every mainstream model on the same shelf, turning customers' cloud commitments into a rope that binds them. The fuller the shelf, the harder it is to leave.
THE FINE PRINT'Private preview' — discount the gold content accordingly
Private preview means invited enterprises first, production use restricted, and pricing and licensing terms undisclosed. Zero data retention and confidential computing are written into the roadmap, but the announcement's own wording keeps them in the future tense.
What procurement teams should really verify is how data-boundary commitments are written into contracts, how far audit logs reach, and whether prices change after general availability. A guarantee in an announcement that is not in the contract does not count.
THE SIGNALThe end of the exclusivity era
Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner, but the April revision of their partnership already opened cross-cloud distribution. The Google Cloud deal is another step in landing that revised clause.
Model distribution is moving from exclusive agency to multi-channel retail. The next round of competition will not be about whose model is stronger, but whose shelf sits closest to the customer's budget.
THE SHIFTWhat Changed
SIGNAL JUDGMENT — ANALYSISA full shelf makes the accounting work
The value of Google Cloud's move lies not in the three models themselves, but in turning model choice into billing choice. Tokenta Signal's judgment stands: the more distribution channels there are, the more model vendors' pricing power disperses — and the stronger enterprise customers' negotiating hand becomes.
WHAT REMAINS UNCERTAINWhat Remains Uncertain
EVIDENCEEvidence
The original confirms the three models and the private-preview scope: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna first; Marketplace billing, creditable against cloud commitments. Zero data retention and confidential computing are still labelled as forthcoming, not delivered guarantees.
