A Few Hundred Orders Against a Billion: Agent Shopping Is Still Tiny
DoorDash disclosed on its October 29 third-quarter earnings call that third-party agents have placed only several hundred orders to date, against 993 million orders in the third quarter and a daily average of about 3 million. CEO Tony Xu said the company should neither fight the trend nor lie to itself.

WHAT HAPPENEDWhat Happened
DoorDash disclosed on its October 29 third-quarter earnings call that third-party agents have placed only several hundred orders so far. CEO Tony Xu's words were that it is maybe several hundred orders in total, from external services such as Muse, Instinct and Fo. His judgment: neither fight the trend, nor lie to ourselves.
The comparison base is stark. DoorDash took 993 million orders in the third quarter, up 28% year on year, and its 2025 reporting put the daily average at about 3 million orders. Several hundred orders do not even register as a rounding error against that base. Agent shopping has been talked about for a long time; actual order volume is still at an early stage.
DoorDash is building agents of its own. The Ask DoorDash chat assistant launched in June, a command-line assistant followed in July, text ordering in September, and the company is testing MCP ordering for businesses. Ask DoorDash's average order value is reportedly nearly 50% higher than non-AI orders. Volume from its own tools is not counted in the several hundred.
REALITY CHECKSeveral Hundred Orders Is Data That Cools the Hype
The past year's narrative for agent shopping was that ordering itself was about to change. DoorDash's first-hand data pulls the narrative back to ground. External agents can indeed place orders, but users still overwhelmingly order inside DoorDash's own app.
That does not mean the trend does not exist; it means the trend starts lower than imagined. Several hundred orders show that agent shopping's infrastructure, trust and habits are all not yet in place.
TWO TRACKSOwn Tools and External Agents Are Two Tracks
DoorDash's strategy is clear: keep cooperating with and watching external agents, while accelerating its own tools. The signal that Ask DoorDash carries a higher average order value shows AI-assisted ordering itself has value; the only question is who owns the entry point.
If agents become the mainstream entry point in the future, what DoorDash will contest is entry-point revenue share and ad slots. Xu also noted on the call that advertising inside agents could be a future business, but current volume is too small to carry value.
FUZZY COUNTAn Unclear Definition Is This Data's Weakness
The several-hundred figure has no stated definition: over what period, which services count, whether failed orders count — none of it was said. Comparing a cumulative figure against a quarterly one shows only the order-of-magnitude gap, not a precise share.
Reading earnings-call data requires asking about definitions before drawing conclusions. The magnitude gap holds; a precise ratio does not. This report is written strictly within that boundary.
THE SHIFTWhat Changed
SIGNAL JUDGMENT — ANALYSISThe Trend Is Real; the Volume Is Still Small
Tokenta Signal's judgment: the agent-shopping story has not collapsed; its starting point was overestimated. The real contest is not who shouts 'everything changes' first, but who secures the entry point and the average order value first.
